What happens in the room
- Ninety minutes all in, or two hours if you add £50.
- A single male model comes to your accommodation and runs the class himself, with no tutor. He’s a working Butler in the Buff too.
- The first 45 minutes are drawing, with him nude and changing pose three or four times.
- The next 45 are butler service once he’s changed: drinks poured, games hosted, a favourite sketch picked and photos with the whole group.
- A4 drawing paper, pencils, rubbers and sharpeners come with him, for as many as 20 guests.
- You supply the leaning surface: trays, large books or the dining table.
- Complete beginners are welcome, and so are mixed and LGBT groups (let us know 14 days ahead if men are coming).
It’s from £15 per person, worked out on up to 20 people, and putting your name against a date is free.
Small rooms inside the walls, bigger ones outside
Apartments and townhouses around Micklegate, Bishophill and Walmgate put you close to everything. The trade-off in older buildings is space: rooms can be small, staircases steep and windows right on the street. He needs clear floor and every guest needs a seat facing him. Ground-floor windows onto a lane or snickelway need the curtains shut, as passers-by mustn’t see in.
Just beyond the walls, the terraces around Bishopthorpe Road and South Bank and the larger houses off the Mount usually offer a bigger living room. Much of the centre is closed to vehicles for a good part of the day, so if your door is on a pedestrian street, say so when you book.
Villages and towns we come to
Outside the city itself, the class goes to Bishopthorpe, Copmanthorpe, Upper Poppleton, Haxby, Strensall, Dunnington, Stamford Bridge and Tadcaster.
We also come out to Helmsley and the North York Moors, Scarborough and Whitby. The price for any of those postcodes shows up in the instant quote.
Race days, nights out and stacking activities
On a race day at the Knavesmire, a late-morning class gets the group together before everyone heads to the course. Otherwise book late afternoon and walk into town afterwards, where Micklegate, Swinegate and Fossgate each have enough bars for a night. Keep an hour free after the planned finish.

We’re at the races on Saturday. When should the class be?
Either the morning before you go or on a different day of the weekend. Remember the spare hour after the planned finish, so don’t schedule it tight against your taxi to the Knavesmire.
Our apartment is on a pedestrian street inside the walls. How does he get to us?
Tell us at booking that the street is closed to traffic. He telephones a few minutes ahead of the start time and again when he’s outside, so be ready to answer and let him in.
The front room of our South Bank terrace is quite small. Is there enough space?
It needs a clear area for him to pose and a seat for every guest facing it. If moving the furniture back doesn’t achieve that, try the kitchen-diner, and check the curtains close in whichever room you use.
