Newcastle’s centre is small. From Central Station it’s about ten minutes downhill to the Quayside, and most of the bars are somewhere in between. That makes it an easy city for a hen weekend, because the night out is never far from where you’re staying. A life drawing class at your apartment or house slots in beforehand: a male model, some pencils and 90 minutes you don’t have to walk anywhere for. The two-hour version costs £50 more.

It’s priced from £15 per person, assuming up to 20 guests, and it suits every level of ability, including none.
Tyneside flats, Jesmond terraces and Quayside views
Large parts of Heaton, Sandyford and Gateshead are made up of Tyneside flats: terraces where each front door leads to either a ground-floor or an upstairs flat. The upstairs ones are reached by a straight flight of stairs and have the living room at the front, above the eye line of anyone walking past, which helps with privacy. Downstairs flats sit level with the pavement, so draw the curtains.
Jesmond’s big terraced houses are a common choice for larger groups and have wide front rooms with space for the model in the middle. Quayside apartments tend to have glass doors and a balcony with the river behind it. That’s lovely for the photos afterwards, but close the blinds while he’s posing nude.
Tyneside and the coast
The model travels across Tyneside and out to the coast, taking in Gateshead, Gosforth, Wallsend, Jarrow, South Shields, Tynemouth, Whitley Bay, Washington and Ponteland.

On to the Quayside
Finish at six and the evening is close by: the Quayside, the Diamond Strip on Collingwood Street and the Bigg Market are a short walk from each other. Groups in Jesmond have Osborne Road on the doorstep. If the evening is at the house instead, add sip and paint and a Buff Butler to host it. The multi-activity discount takes £25 off two activities and £40 off three.

Newcastle Life Drawing: Quick Answers
We’ve rented an upstairs Tyneside flat in Heaton. Does a first-floor living room work?
Yes. There’s nothing heavy to carry up, only paper and pencils, and an upstairs front room is harder to see into. It still needs floor space for posing and a separate room for him to change.
Newcastle is known for nights out with no coat. Does the model have to be fully nude?
Nude is how the drawing half normally runs, but you can ask for him to stay partly clothed. Mention it when you book.
It’s Great North Run weekend and roads will be closed. How do we know he’s on his way?
He checks in with our office on the morning, phones you 5 to 10 minutes before the start and rings again from outside. Keep a phone on and within reach.
