Start to finish
- He phones 5 to 10 minutes ahead, then again from outside, so the bride doesn’t see him coming.
- He hands round pencils and A4 paper, plus rubbers and sharpeners. There’s enough for 20 guests.
- Drawing lasts 45 minutes, during which he takes three or four nude poses. No tutor comes with him, he leads it himself, and nobody needs to be any good.
- He goes off to change into butler attire.
- The remaining 45 minutes are butler service: drinks served, party games hosted, his favourite drawing chosen and group photos taken.
It costs from £15 per person, worked out on 20 guests or fewer.
Semis, terraces and old warehouses
Some hen groups skip the city-centre apartments and rent a whole house in Chorlton, Didsbury or Whalley Range, where red-brick terraces and big Victorian semis are the norm. A semi’s front room with the sofas pushed back will usually take a circle of guests with the model in the middle. Fill the gaps with dining chairs and floor cushions, and find everyone a book or tray to rest the paper on.
Converted warehouses, such as those around Piccadilly Basin and along Whitworth Street, come with tall windows and other flats looking in. Draw the blinds, because nobody outside should be able to see the session. On a grey afternoon, put every lamp on. He’ll also want a bedroom to get changed in.

If it’s actually sunny, can we do the class in the garden?
Only if the garden can’t be seen from the street or the neighbours’ windows. The model is nude, which rules out anywhere the public might catch sight of him. In a Manchester terrace or semi that usually means staying indoors.
We’re a mixed group heading to Canal Street afterwards. Are men allowed in the class?
Yes, mixed and LGBT groups are welcome. Let us know at least 14 days beforehand if men will be there.
There are 24 of us in a house in Chorlton. Is that too many?
Not necessarily. Groups over 20 are taken on request, and materials for each guest beyond 20 cost £5 per person.
